The Necessary Starting place for Self-Help

Action seems to follow feeling, but really action and feeling go together, and by regulating the action, which is under the more direct control of the will, we can indirectly regulate the feeling, which is not.
There are two implications of the statement. The first is that we must not hold ourselves directly accountable for our emotions, in the sense of considering ourselves better or worse people because of particular ones. Since feelings are not under the direct control of the will, we must try to judge ourselves by how we act, not by how we feel. This conclusion needs little said about it. The second is that the best levers for therapy are our own actions. The development of a therapy method which allows us to change our psyches by making enlightened choices of action is to be the main matter of this topic.
